Forty-eight years ago, Italian cycling fans were sent to heaven when local hero Sandro Montelbano captured two stage victories and the overall General Classification in the inaugural Giro di Montelbano. Since then, there were only brief flashes of Italian joy — Alonso Falcone 23 years ago and Paulo Salvatore 12 years ago — but no one matched Sandro Montelbano’s two-stage feat. Even worse, no Italian ever triumphed in the final sprint through Montelbano town.
That all changed last season when Rafaello Genovese crossed the line first, ending 47 years of waiting and sending Montelbano town into delirium.
Genovese carried that momentum throughout the year, racking up 13 podiums and 6 wins, including an unbelievable GC–SC double at the Perm Tour, which all earned him the Italian National Championship title and jersey.
Winning here again, for the second year in a row and this time wearing the tricolore, caused a collective orgasm in Montelbano. The party, locals say, still hasn’t stopped.
