by Tim Johnson, at 10/7-10 - 18:13 GMT

Enrico wins his second big race

Bourg d'Oisans: Today, Giovanny Enrico (CCFC) once again proved he is a man for the big races as he won the Division 1 Classic at Alpe d'Huez. Having won his first major race last season, the Perm Tour, Enrico is showing that at 30 he is still a man to be feared. Enrico will be looking to keep his form up in preparation for his defense of the Perm Tour in a few weeks.

Sterling Dorsher (FFL) again showed his climbing class to finish 2nd. However, the englishman still waits for his first big career victory and, at 31, time is running out. 24 year-old Toby Caraway (Ursus RT) scored his first OCM career points in finishing 3rd, and sent out a warning to the rest of the peleton that he is a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Tito Vera (Gradient Levellers) finished 4th with Miltos Tsoukas (Telek@m) completing the top 5.

  Arbizu

and Yushua score maiden career victories

Elsewhere, Valentin Arbizu (Siporex) won the first race of the season, the Valladolid - León sprint. The Ecuadorian youngster scored his first major result in OCM, in a race that saw many of the pre-race favourites finishing outside the top 9. Julius Delavignette (Team airik) finished 2nd with Igor Kincheloe (Team Trier) 3rd.

Thaqib Yushua (Ursus RT) won the first TT of the year in Rome. The Lebanese 23 year-old beat off the big guns to take his first career victory. With Caraway and Yushua, Ursus RT have two ultra-talented youngsters who have given the Dutch outfit the perfect season start. Joey Poarch (Cyklista) rode well to finish 2nd with the "Solo Man", Solomon Henschel (Team Whalers)in 3rd. Season 12's Best Time triallist, Gregory Levis (Equipo Easy On) suffered bike problems and came in outside the top 9.

  Yesterday,

skils started season 13 ominously by winning the all-round race in Italy, the Giro di Firenze. Riyad Hashim, a veteran of the all-round race, took 1st in what was only his 3rd podium in the last two years. Austrian super-climber Dirk "He-Man" Herman (Telek@m) finished 2nd in what may be one of his last race's for the team. Brody Rimmer (Equipo Easy On) came in 3rd to give the Costa Rican team their second podium of the season. They are now only 12 points off the 5000 point barrier and are creeping closer and closer to the top spot.

  Time for the Cobbles

With the first Classic of the season over, focus now moves to the cobbles. First, the Pre-Roubaix Classic in two days, then the Roubaix Classic itself on Day 10. Finally, eyes will move on to Kelemen Nae (Team Tirilla) who will be looking to defend his title at Tweedaagse van Antwerpen. Sign up has already started.

That Classic at Alpe d'Huez, has to be the toughest field ever to contest a climbing stage, since I ve been playing. I also think it is impossible to win this together with the World Championships and Elias Márquez Invitational, after each other, with the same rider. All pretigous races at the same part of the season.

You're right, it was an amazing field. I probably would have mentioned it, but these days all climbing races seem to be so well contested.

Also, since I've been in Div 1, all but a few climbing races seem have been such high quality, so am used to it. Even Div 2 - like the Volta last season - Yamauchi, Sahir, Papadimitriou, Frisch, Sierra, Defley, Vera etc.
