It was a nice day for cycling in Vejle with sun and 16 degree as the peloton rolled out to begin the 45th edition of the Danish hill classic. It didn't take very long for the break to establish themselves, with little fight from the peloton in the early stages.

Four riders – Armin Baron (Loithletics), Elbert Hulshof (Oekiewakkie), Eliasz Iwanek (Bilsky) and Cirilo Granados (Peloton Pushers) – got away almost immediately, while Josselin Châtel (Team Chill), Andrey Kulikov (Pelles Gazelles) and Thomas Vick (mortenryt) would soon link up to make it seven up front.

Goege Team and Sigue Sigue Sputnik was among the teams setting the pace at the head of the peloton. The break’s advantage reaches 9:20 at one point, but was just over six minutes as the seven men reached the southernmost point of the route at area of Kolding.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik upped the pace on the first climb of the day, so much so that the peloton split. The resulting chaos left behind

a reduced peloton of around 80 riders, with Peder Sivertsen (Il Grillo) the major victim.

Rafa? Figura (Tashkent Browncoats) and Adrian Durakovic (Il Grillo) were among the riders caught out, later attacking across the gap to try and save their races. Up front, Andrey Kulikov (Pelles Gazelles) left the break behind on the climb, going solo to the line.

He would last out front until shortly after Grejs River valley, when attacks from the peloton saw his gap evaporate. Aleksander Hetland (Team WonderDee) was among the most active men as a large group broke away from the peloton. There were some other favourites in the move, including Royce Dodemaide (Team Chill) and Kendrick Offutt (Peloton Pushers), but the two groups soon came back together at the outskirt of Vejle.

On the way to the final climb of the day three riders attacked from the peloton. Jacob Wieringh (Hommerts Cycling Team), Lev Ivan?i? (mortenryt) and Thomas Van Huffel (Team Belfius) made it a three-man group on the final climb of the day, but despite Wieringhs’

attack, they were all brought back by the Goege Team-led peloton.

Ole Uttenberger(Goege Team) followed an attack by Nader Al Shibani (Cyclocomotiv), while Adrián Torrillas (Sigue Sigue Sputnik) made it across to make it a lead trio.

Uttenberger attacked close to the top and the finish line, shedding the duo and going for glory. Further back, a group including Josue Berlanga(Bilsky), Florian Schippers (Oekiewakkie), Luke Gartner (Spin Doctor), Pelle Adams (kakaolin), Lasse Sunde (Pelles Gazelles) and Aleksander Hetland (Team WonderDee) got away from what was left of the peloton.

But Uttenberger was only gaining time on those behind. After podium places at Vejle Omegn and Oslo Grand Prix, the Swiss wouldn’t be denied his big classic win here.

The Berlanga group was working together, but Uttenberger wasn’t ceding any time – not to them, nor to Al Shibani and Torrillas.

Uttenberger retained his advantage to the finish to seal the biggest win of his career.
