Season 12 Awards – The Sturmannator dominates
by Tim Johnson, at 7/7-10 - 21:59 GMT

Stockholm, the Summer Night City, was the venue for the Season 12 Awards ceremony, the location chosen as a tribute to last year’s Best Rider and winner of the Äme Anderberg Trophy, Elias Holmström. OCM fans flocked to Stockholm University, trying to get a glimpse of their heroes and a sense of which riders would be honoured for their exploits over the season.

  All about the Sturmannator

Torben Sturmann, the shinboners sprinter, was the rider who was voted by OCM managers as the Best Rider of Season 12. Sturmann has been in sensational form all season with no less than 11 victories, meaning the German finished the Season as the Number 1 ranked rider. Three stage victories in the Volta au Porto gave him the Green Jersey and another three victories in the Netherlands Tour gave him overall victory, the highlight of his season. Sturmann was presented the Äme Anderberg Trophy by the great man himself, a trophy crafted to resemble the Swedish climber in action. Kyle Abston (CCFC) finished as the 2nd best rider of the season with last year’s winner, Elias Holmström, voted into 3rd.

Sturmann also took the second award of the evening, the award for Best Sprinter. Kyle Abston once again came 2nd to the German and Jens Waesbergen (Cyklista) 3rd. Season 12 has been a great one for Sturmann and his shinboners team and he will surely be eyeing up the Germany Green jersey for Season 13.

Elias Holmström defended his Best Climber award, with every manager but one voting him in 1st place. Season 12 was not quite as successful for the Swede as Season 11 but five victories, including the Alpe d`Huez Division 1 Classic, was still a good haul. Keegan Shiable (Team Kernow) was the runner-up, which adds to his runner-up award from last season. Sterling Dorsher (FFL) came in 3rd.

  A Levis double

Gregory Levis (Equipo Easy On) was another rider to pick up two awards. His first visit to the podium was to collect the award for Best Time Trialler. Five victories including the prestigious Germany time trial reflect a stunning debut season for the Cayman Islander. Sven-Olof

Dahlström (Bajen Wannabies) was the runner-up with Philip Hostede (VakantieZon) in 3rd.

Levis’ second award of the night was the Best Young rider award. 1st places in the Youth Competitions at Germany and Perm and 2nd places at Essex and Tweedaagse van Antwerpen have shown that the 24 year old can compete in the Tours as well as Time Trials. The award is a credit to Equipo Easy On who investment in Caribbean talent has paid off, leaving them with one of the youngest and most talented squads in OCM. In any other year, Dan Korošec (Team iPower) would surely have won this award. The Slovenian picked up stage wins at Germany, Cymru Taith and the Volta to go alongside his Lappi Sea GP Classic win, but ultimately had to settle for the 2nd best young rider. Patya Gordeyeva’s (Yuri Super Team) nine podiums gave him 3rd place.

Arve Guttormsen (The Killers) picked up the award for Best Cobbler of Season 12. The Norweigan claimed eight results over the season, five of them coming in Belgium. Jari Fredriksson (Team RI) came 2nd with Tweedaagse van Antwerpen winner, Kelemen Nae (Team Tirilla), in 3rd.

  Brasil's Germany Triumph enough

The Best Tour Rider award was a close run affair but ultimately Germany Tour winner Amadeu Brasil (Bajen Belfast) triumphed. The fact that the Brazilian picked up the award with only four results, three of them at Germany, reflects the importance of the Germany Tour. However, one should remember that he only made his debut halfway through the season and his result at Germany shows he will be a favourite for Tours in the coming Season. Jens Waesbergen (Cycklista) was voted into 2nd. The Dutch sprinter proved he is a force in the Tours with stage victories in Germany, Perm and Essex and 3rd place in the GC in Germany and Essex. With two 2nd places and a 3rd in this and last year’s awards, Waesbergen must be wondering what he needs to do to walk off with a trophy. Torben Sturmann was voted into 3rd place with the German perhaps a bit disappointed not to make it the hat trick.

CCFC’s Kyle Abston finally won an award – for the Best Breakthrough rider. Season 12

saw Abston score seven victories, including the much-coveted Germany Green jersey, and a rise in the rankings from virtual obscurity to World Number 2. After missing out three times earlier in the night, the Englishman seemed relieved to finally get his hands on a trophy, a trophy that rewards perhaps one of the best debut seasons ever seen in OCM. Dan Korošec picked up his second 2nd place of the night with Season 12 World Championship Isaak Papadimitriou (Club Ciclista Riaza) finishing joint 2nd alongside him.

  skils once again on top

Dutch powerhouse, skils, heavy investment in talent paid off as they were once again overwhelmingly named Best Team in OCM. An all–round team performance, with seven riders contributing points to the team, saw them go above 6000 points at various stages during the season. However, with only one major victory, at Essex, skils may well be looking at bigger fish over the coming season. It was close for 2nd place with Equipo Easy On just edging out CCFC.

Dan Korošec finally got his hands on some silver wear as his team, Team iPower, won the award for Best Breakthrough Team. Korošec was instrumental in his team’s success which saw them rise 121 places up the ranks to finish in 13th place. The season saw them win two stages of the Germany Tour and a Division 2 Classic. El Svilandos was voted into 2nd with Kremer and scilian sharing the award for 3rd.

  And finally....

....the award that no one wants, the Season’s Most Disappointing Rider, went to Viggo Monsen of Team Whalers. The award may seem a bit harsh to a rider with almost zero history in OCM to live up to but, as one of the most talented riders about, Monsen disappointed on the big stage. The Norwegian graciously accepted his award alongside manager JackO who showed his support for the rider by announcing, ‘he can put the statuette on the mantle next to his Best Breakthrough Rider award next season.’ We wouldn’t be surprised if he is right.

So, another Season begins. Who will be getting their hands around Äme’s silver body next year in Germany?

Great article! I'm sure many people have looked forward to this article and these awards, and only the runner-ups will be disappointed.
The awards are well deserved. Now, I'm looking forward to the next awards show of season 14 which will hopefully be just as entertaining!

Great write up, Tim! Congratulations to the winners and nominees.

I disagree with a lot of the consensus - mostly in regards to giving way too much credit to sprinters. The only omission that I find really strange though is Yasir Sahir not even making the top 3 for Best Tour Rider.
