Germany Tour Review – Brasil conquers Germany

The most anticipated tour of them all, the Germany Tour, has been raced once again for the 11th time. The tour is the most prestigious one in the top division and most of the top teams compete in this race with their best climbers, sprinters and time-trialists. This season’s Germany Tour was no exception.

One rider that shined more than everybody in the peloton was the winner of the General Classification, Amadeu Brasil (Bajen Belfast), who made his debut in this edition of the Germany Tour. In spite of his inexperience, his clever riding coupled with the great support of his team meant he managed to ride into Berlin as the winner of the tour. The Brazilian rider achieved one stage victory, winning stage 4’s mountain top finish up to Frankfurt am Main. This is a stage that defending champion Vernon Kings won as well in his winning tour. However, he had to settle for 2nd place this year in a thoroughly disappointing tour that saw the American finish in 10th place.

A rider that surprised most followers of the tour was the runner-up from Team Weeny, Roy Marstrand, who almost managed to keep up with Amadeu Brasil with support from the former triple winner Elias Márquez. However, the most surprising rider of all at the top of the classification was Jens Waesbergen. Cyklista’s sprinter did well in the hills, sprints and time-trials and managed to limit his losses in the mountains which gave him an impressive 3rd place.

Jens Waesbergen continued what has been an amazing season for the Dutch rider but ultimately failed to win the sprinter’s Green Jersey. This honour fell to Kyle Abston (CCFC) whose three stage wins was enough to give

the English rider 190 points, a record in the Green Jersey competition. Another of the favorites for this competition, Broderick Rimmer (Equipo Easy On), was third but did not manage to win any stages. Rimmer was very consistent throughout the tour and did surprisingly well in the mountains. He was 9th overall and 2nd in the Youth Classification.

The Youth Classification was won by another rider from Equipo Easy On, Gregory Levis, who won the big time-trial, Munich ITT, for the second season in a row. Levis won the Youth Classification in Perm Tour and was the runner-up in Essex Tour as well Tweedaagse van Antwerpen – he has truly proved this season that he is a rider to follow in the future. Though, many doubt that we will see him on the top of the podium in Berlin due to a lack of ability in the mountains. The young talent from Fairfield Flyers Cycling, Kittipong Klahan, was 3rd in the Youth Classification that was dominated by Equipo Easy On.

The Germany Tour has never been won by a home favourite and this edition once again failed to fulfil the hopes of the Germans fans. Pauli Michielsen (skils) was 4th as the best German rider and the current number 1 on the OCM tour ranking, Torben Sturmann, appeared to use Germany as a practice rider for the Netherlands Tour. This season, however, the German supporters are beginning to be more optimistic than before. They have put their focus on the Austrian team Cycaust from the 3rd division in which one of the biggest German talents ever has been spotted. They see a future winner of the Germany Tour in Jacques Haff, a rider that has achieved much success in division 3 but has yet to prove his skills in the top division. Perhaps he will win Germany Tour one day? Time will tell.
