Otto Skoglund showed once again why he is a top class tour rider when he took out Stage 1 of the Perm Tour today for CCFC.
Here are some of the morning's talking points.
Skoglund puts on pink
They say it takes a confident chap to pull off a pink top and all eyes were on CCFC's Skoglund as he put on the leader's jersey on Saturday morning.
The Norwegian sprinter was part of a winning break that formed close to the finish, following and then comfortably beating SupperSoppene's puncheur and fellow countryman Roy Rasmussen to the line.
Ocaña's Spanish sprinter Baltazar Woriega would have been expected to give Skoglund a run for his money but seemed out of gas in the last 50m and coasted home for a place on the podium.
Skoglund is not expected to hold on to the jersey as they head to the high mountains later tonight but his team will no doubt have been pleased with the early stage win.
"I was hoping, but not expecting a win at the start today," he said after catching | | his breath at the finish line. "But this is not bad and I think (CCFC boss) Einar owes me some Krokan-is. Delicious."
The walking wounded
While there were no new injuries to report after the first stage of the Perm Tour, there were plenty of riders to bring up the rear after beginning the first stage with niggling injuries.
The broom wagon was definitely looming behind the last group on the road as several riders including Conny Davidson (NSCT), Egil Mo (Blues Racing) and Santos Marquina (Abelixe) brought up the rear.
Strangely enough, last place went not to an injured rider but to SupperSoppene's Kevin Tønnesen, who barely made the time cut. The 32-year-old is expected to help Rasmussen in the mountains and was probably saving energy for the second stage.
Age is just a number
Irish veteran Hugh Innskeep is getting on in years, but proved he could still teach the young whippersnappers a thing or two by finishing 5th on the first stage, 27 seconds in arrears.
The 33-year-old loves the Perm Tour, having won the general classification nine years ago. He also has form on
| | Ochjor - Ochjor, having won this prologue twice, in Season 31 and 34.
The Russian fans have come to regard him almost as one of their own and there were cheers aplenty as the Burren Connemara man skidded across the finishing line in a coughing fit.
Ready to pounce
While Rasmussen did his chances of putting on the pink jersey no huge harm by finishing second on the day, there are a few other riders who are similarly in contention following the conclusion of Stage 1.
PegasusFlights' Belgian climber Alain De Keijsere came in 4th place, only 17 seconds back while AnnoDomini's downhill specialist and team leader Orlando Kacciavurian also finished 8th and 36 seconds down.
Further back are the likes of Szirmai Világos' Csoknay Aurél, cilmeri's Emanuel Uffenbrink and Quick step minded's Joaquin Armesto - none of whom are slouches on the mountains.
Who will take advantage on the ride to Perm? Stay tuned to find out!
