I will become awesome. Yes, I am but, how?
by Finz, at 22/4-15 - 23:22 GMT

That question will be asked by any starting manager that found some funds and entered the OCM league because they love cycling and want to become a legend.

The road to glory is paved with difficulties and question such as, is my squad of amateuristic enthousiasts capable of leading this team forward. You understand your riders quickly and find out that they want to race. They are signed in and they score your first points for you.
This is a highlight in your young career and will give you the courage to continue.
But this courage is shattered when you encounter strong competition in the form of other teams in a higher league. It starts now.

You need to improve but, how will you do that?
Training your star rider is the option. You talk to him and ask him the question; Is this what you want and are you willing to sacrifice your life for me.
"I will follow you and give my life for you." his answer will be, but only if you are lucky.
Although many managers disagree, luck is indeed a big advantage in this game. You train your riders, pass on your experience as a fellow cyclist. You are their friend, their father, their mother. Sometimes you even pass that thin line and become their girlfriend. All for that one result that will give your team those points that make you gain a place up the OCM ranks.

Happy moments are changed with sad ones. A rider will not perform, no matter how hard you try, and there is nothing else to do then take

him apart and tell him that he has no chance in this world and should persu other dreams and move on. As the good manager you are, you give him his bike and some wise words, before you kick him out and leave him to rot.

Your team advances and you need to hire even better riders. You find them everywhere, from the free market, where potential stars are born, or try to lure a future bright light from another team.
Enemies for life are made in this period. Your riders are being tempted by other teams to leave you. Now you will have to get all your skills together to let them stay. Most manager use chains but some managers make compounds surrounded by armed guards to prevent their riders to switch teams.
Finally, after hard work and training, and you may even have bought some special equipment, you find yourself in that place that you can ride a tour. Your first one, is located in America. This tour will bring you much joy, because you are in it, but no points. You still are not good enough you realize.

Another star is lured into your team, you give all your money to him, and let him train and train, and he will get you far. That is your believe of course. You promise him everything as long as he continues training.
You get results again, you have money coming in, and are able to make a stable team. This team is good. And you are happy.
This is the time you really need to look out. Happiness is the first stage of complete misery. Whenever you feel happy, you need to watch out.

Get another star, lure him away from another team, and he will lead your second team. Now you have two teams that bring in money and points that are needed to move up even further.
Your goal is in sight. A big team with riders that win races, even if they are not fully prepared for it. This is the moment you can look down.

You look down and see your team. Young, handsome cyclists that will die for you. They want to do that because you are their manager, their father, their mother and sometimes even their girlfriend.
They ride their bikes, cleaned by your mechanics, on bruised bodies, nurtured by your doctors. They are doing everything what you ask them to do. And they are happy, so you need to change your team.

This is when you finally realize. You are The Manager and can decide over people's lives. You are the ruler of your kingdom and your soldiers admire you. They look up to you.
Even fellow managers are talking about you. They want to be like you. And you are happy.
But again, do not be happy, other managers don't want to be like you, they want your place. And kick you away from it. But you are better, you are well equipped, and your team is great.

This is when you have found the thing that makes a team good. It is you. Because you are awesome.
And you say it to everybody.
This team is awesome, not because of its points, not because of its wins. This team is awesome, because I am awesome!

I've read this in one of your PRs a few years ago but I think using one of your best quips as a leitmotiv is not a bad idea.
