Giro di Sicilia - a preview
by Finz, at 15/2-15 - 22:44 GMT

The division four tour around the island of Sicily is about to start and many sprint teams have found the courage to travel to the south of Italy. The warmth is rising and the blossoms are full this time of year but the riders await four stages of Sicilian tarmac. Almost all stages are suited for sprinters but the last one is a bit difficult. You can win or lose the Giro here. My favourites are Rudolf Matejka for winning the General Classification and Arkady Nesterov for winning the Youth Classification. Numbers two and three are more difficult Jan-Joost Batenburg and Dominick Helton

   Vitória FC

Interesting to see which rider becomes captain for Vitória FC. With Dominick Helton and Godfried Engelborgh they have two riders that can for a victory in any of the stages. Dominick Helton is a better rider in the end, and he is stronger, which is needed in the last stage. He will get some results in the stages.

   Team Albatros

Jørg Lundberg is the rider for Team Albatros that should give them points. He is a decent rider and can score some points in the first stage and probably some points in the latter stages. His performance will be too weak however to play a role in the General Classification.

With Arkady Nesterov we reached our first real favourite. Winning the Classico di Siracusa this season gave him a much needed boost and a trophy. And he wants to expand his trophy cabinet. The Youth Classification is a goal as is the General Classification.

   NJ procycling

Jonathan Skibby is the sprinter for NJ procycling and he is decent enough to get some nice classifications for the team. We will probably see him on the second and third stage in a top nine position. His team is too weak to form any threat to the teams with General Classification hopes.

   Men of Steel

A rider that can win a stage or two is Wit Bruaene. The Belgian riding for Men of Steel is very strong when the stage ends in a bunch sprint. Not many are faster and can deliver such a jump in the end. The first stage can go both ways but where he will lose it is in stage four. He just is not strong enough to conquer the mountains around Palermo.

   Drake Racing

Isak Antonsen has a decent season with four victories already

and he is ready to shine in Sicily. His form is very good and he might be in topform. If he is he could form a treath to both the Youth Classification and the General Classification. For the first he is a favourite for the second an outsider.

   Eriknogwat

I am not sure but if I was the manager of Eriknogwat I would go for Jozua Bodde as my captain. Dirk Horring seems the rider with the support here and they are targeting stage victories. Unless there will be topform for Jozua Bodde ofcourse.

   Starlynk Bermuda

The Bermudans enter with a young rider named Kevin Coleman and he is their sprinter for this race. With support of five countrymen they are here to enjoy the Sicilian scenery and try to mingle with the better sprinters in the bunch sprint.

   Valerie Pro Cycling Team

Placido Carballo is the rider for Valerie Pro Cycling Team that is in front when the sprint is starting. His team is mediocure and he has to do it, mostly, all by himself. We do not forsee any victory for this team but he might get a nice result in a stage.

   TJ Banik OKD

Homeriders TJ Banik OKD have Dican Flórián and he is a favourite of mine. He has dissapointed me many times already but I will write him down for the Youth Classification again. A good sprinter with a good leadout squad. He will get results in the sprints but, will he finally get the wins.

   Songolooz

With Cadman Kantor in your squad you must enter Giro di Sicilia. A great sprinter and he could get a nice result. Some say he is old, others call it experienced. The lack of support will not favour him however and he could win a stage but, we think they have to settle for a top nine.

   Manisaspor

Is Erdal Özkan riding again as captain. This team is squeezing their riders like lemons. Our bets are not on this team, his riders are not prepared for a fierce sprintrace and in the end, stage four proves too much for their captain.

   Jet Black

A team that enters the Giro with riders that target the first stage only. Eugene Nadruku is their best bet. A great timetrial rider. In recent time however we have seen sprinters do better on such a short timetrial then real specialists. We do not think they will win the first

stage.

   Blues Racing

The Americans of Blues Racing have brought us Indian champion Simran Krishnan. He is not the best sprinter but his talent is more in the stages that have hills. And stage four is known for the hills. If Blues Racing can get this rider close enough in the first three stages, he could upset the others by winning the last stage and the tour.

   Luveaucek

Rudolf Matejka is the biggest favourite. He is back on his way up and he is happy to join Giro di Sicilia. With a team worthy of Top Division they are the one everybody is looking for. At least two stage victories and a top three finish in the General Classification. Everything else is a dissaster.

   cenas
Willem Alards is the rider for cenas that should score the points. Just like Jet Black, cenas is going for a first stage victory and tries to hang on as long as possible. After Tweedaagse van Antwerpen, this team has finally managed to enter a tour again. Let us hope they will do better this time.

   Darkwave Recordings

Guðmundur Þórmarsson beats Luís Landim by three years and that is probably why Guðmundur is captain. The aging squad of Darkwave Recordings is able to sign up for tours still and is still doing ok there. We will not see them on the first place in stages or General Classification but a few top nine places is doable.

   WEST COLUMBIA

WEST COLUMBIA entered another tour with Felix Fencl as his captain. The team is too weak and not cut out for this tour. They will get a result on stage one and maybe do good on stage four. Looking at Felix Fencl I think they will get a nice result in the General Classification.

   Holwerda Cycling

Jan-Joost Batenburg failed a few times, in Kanagaroo Tour for example. But he can make it all good in Giro di Sicilia. If he reaches topform he could go for a nice strawl on victory lane. A rider to watch in the sprints and maybe on the last stage when the flowers are being handed out.

   Oscar en Luna

Mirko Paši? is the sprinter for Oscar en Luna and will he be their sunshine or not. He is not too bad and his support is ok also. We can see him in front in the flat stages two and three. In the end he will fall back on stage four. But that is not a problem if he manages some points and money.
