Gathering at the marvelous Physics and Aerodynamics Center in Vejle, Denmark, the OCM Community is about to reward the outstanding riders and managers of the closing, season 20. Breaking with the tradition, which states that the awards are celebrated in the country of the previous best rider of the season, they come back to Denmark in what seems to be a strategy of Nick Lissner to show his support to local cycling (he has been accused of disdaining Danish riders in the new era of his team), as he also created a new Tour in fifth division which cycles around Denmark.
It has been a season to celebrate (we are 5 years old!), also to get surprising winners, young guns confirmations, top spot fights… well, what cycling is about.
Let’s not delay the announcements, please welcome tonight’s hosts Eli from Equipo Easy On and Holger Czukay from Asymm Project!*
Eli: “Good evening everyone. I’ve been on top of OCM for a long time, and now that they call me to present this gala I feel like getting older by the minute. I’m not still an old glory!”
Holger: “Focus on the awards, man!”
Eli: “Huh, yeah, sorry. First award, as usual, goes to the best hiller out there which, if you ask me, is Truman Vancil. However, the community voted that this season the winner is… Anghel Ghidarcea (WV De Dommel)! He gets the award with a comfortable margin over Drimalas and Reinhold.”
Holger: “Leadout trains’ work differently nowadays, but will that have an effect on the awards? Best sprinter of season 20 award goes to… Jan-Joost Dussel (peddelen)! It was amazingly close, as a pure sprint has to be, between Dussel and Ahnfeldt-Mollerup. Third place, out of the picture, goes for Todd Caff.”
Eli: “Let’s | | continue with best climber, the Sterling Dorsher Trophy. And this one goes to Nico-Jan Stubbe (WV De Dommel)! Mark can be more than happy with his second award of the night. As in the ranks, it seems that this is a day for Dutch people to collect praises… Dammen and Ballestero complete the imaginary podium for this category.”
Holger: “After the best days of Schimmel are gone, the cobbles offered us a renewed set of competitors. The community decided to award Sandijs Semerjaks (JJL24SS) as the best cobbler of season 20! Uttenberger and Rivera round up this category.”
Eli: “Closing with the skill-awards, best time trialist award goes to… Isac Tingmann (Nairobi City Cycling Club)! This guy himself has put his team on the elite of the OCM. Second place goes to the World Champion Eswaran, who was close to getting it, and Tingmann’s teammate Juhl.”
Holger: “Next category awards the best tour rider. The Elias Marquez trophy goes to… Jan-Joost Dussel (peddelen)! Skinner was close, but Dussel gets his second award; Scothern, a classic of the category, gets the third place.”
Eli: “Best young rider award comes next. The best “young gun” is… Evan Tomkins (Gradient Levellers)! Our young gun’s expert nailed it with this one. Sijmonds was a close second, with Enoch getting third place.”
Holger: “Continuing with the best rider outside top division, this one goes to Yannick Elssen (Team JAN)! Often an undervalued rider because of not being on top division, I have to personally congratulate this guy. However, I wish I could avoid him in my races! Sirjani and Lewicki get second and third places.”
Eli: “Best breakthrough rider of season 20, for the guy who appeared from nowhere, goes to Timo Buchinx (Drapeau
| | Noir)! I have to stress that all the five riders in this category had their chances to get the award, but Buchinx got a dozen of points extra. Eswaran and Tomkins complete the podium with a fierce battle with Caff and Ballesteros.”
Holger: “As you know, the Committee decided not to give the award to the best breakthrough team. That is meant to encourage new teams to a quick development for next season. I’ve heard that something called “Turdehfrans” attracts new teams to OCM, so I’m sure we will have a great winner next year!”
Eli: “Finally, the pair of most wanted awards. The best rider of the season, awarded with the Ame Anderberg Trophy, goes to… Jan-Joost Dussel (peddelen)!!! Is there any doubt about the quality of this guy? He will enter the books as one of the greatest riders ever. Ahnfeldt-Mollerup was a far behind second place, unable to stop the Dutch rider power. Nico-Jan Stubbe gets third.”
Holger: “The last award of the night, in recognition to the best manager of the season goes to… johny from johny2!!! That was an overwhelming victory (that was the biggest margin of the entire awards) by a manager who took micromanagement and season planning to a higher degree. Who knows, probably all you need is a flag change! Pete, from peddelen, gets the second place, with Mark of WV De Dommel third.”
Congratulations to all the winners!
*Note: I didn’t ask Eli to join the awards’ gala, and so I just invented his speech. I don’t even know if he wished you good evening, so I’m sorry if he didn’t. Also, I am aware that many riders of Team Zyte have Danish relatives. The accusation was just made on stylistic purposes.
