A New Japanese Legend?
by Tim Johnson, at 8/11-10 - 15:33 GMT

The best recent press release by a manager is about another dicovery of talent - this time in Japan.

(written by Justin of Hommerts Cycling Team)

24 years ago Susumu Miyazaki was born in the centre of Tokyo. With very wealthy parents he had a comfortable youth. He went to one of the best schools in the city and got spoiled a lot with nice presents, which would have made many classmates jealous. But not in this case. Susumu liked to help people out, always with a smile on his face. Therefore, many people called him Susu, a sweet nickname for a friendly guy.

High grades at school and nice reports made his parents very happy and for his 16th birthday he was allowed to choose his own present for the first time. Money wasn't important and so he could choose anything he wanted. Instead of a new car for the future, a big "my sweet 16" party or something else expensive he chose a road bike. Of course a new and expensive one but why a road bike?

In secret Susu had developed a love for cycling. He read about cycling in Europe and was sold right away. He also wanted to join a cycling club but his parents wouldn't let him. He was going to study and join one of the best colleges in Tokyo.

He listened to his parents but every day he still spent hours on his bike. Susu was 20 years now and every day was the same. Learn, write, read books, do homework and finally train. Racing through the streets of Tokyo...a relief, pushing yourself to the limit and going beyond it. But still, every day the same, until one day.

He had been training for 4 hours when he reached the centre of Tokyo. He was tired and it was raining hard but he needed this training because tomorrow he would

participate in the Amateur edition of Mito – Tokyo. All the stars from Europe here in Tokyo. He would do anything to compete with the professionals in that race, a dream come true.

Whilst waiting at some traffic lights a car pulled along Susu. The driver told him he was surprised to see a young fellow racing in these weather conditions. Susumu answered, telling the driver he already trained for 4 years and loved to train in these conditions. Also he mentioned he would compete for the first time in the amateur edition of Mito – Tokyo tomorrow. Not being a shy lad, he also said that he was pretty talented. Surprisingly, the man asked if he could come to the Sports centre the tomorrow morning.

The next day Susumu showed up in the huge Sport centre, not too far away from his home. A few minutes later he saw the man who told him he had some connections here and so wanted to do some tests with him. Susumu had to sprint on a pinned bike and they also tested his stamina. The bike went up and down to test his climbing ability. An hour later he was sitting on a chair in the waiting room when the man told him to follow him to an office. He got told that the results from the tests were impressive. Then the man said something that Susumu would have never expected. 'I've got a professional cycling team in the Netherlands and I'm desperate to find a Japanese talent'. I can see you got lots of it and I’d like it very much if you would come with me to the Netherlands'. I can make a great rider of you'.

It turned out that the man was Justin Boonstra, the manager of Hommerts Cycling Team, who was on business here in Tokyo. A stoke of luck for Susu.

After skipping Mito – Tokyo a long conversation with his parents followed. They were upset

that Susumu suddenly wanted to stop college and just leave everyone behind, to go with an unknown man to a country far away. They always wanted Susumu to graduate and find a good job. On the other hand, they also knew how much he loved cycling. A normal guy wouldn't train for hours every day on a bike. Also they had always rejected his pleas to join a cycling club. And finally, with some persuasive talking from Boonstra, they gave their permission.

Now 4 years later on, aged 24, Susumu Miyazaki is a well known rider in OCM world. In his first year at Hommerts Cycling Team he was mostly busy with training. Then after that first year he showed himself to the cycling world. First in the lower divisions with results in the 2.1 race Gisborne Wairata and a win in Lenos GP. But last season was his official breakthrough. A season with so many highlights like results in Tours and a win in St. Petersburg. There was only one disappointment; his performance in the World Championships.

Now, Yasunari Yamauchi (Team iPower) and Miyazaki are the pride of Japan. They are heros in their own country, but Miyazaki wants more. He knows for the Japanese people only one race really matters; Mito - Tokyo. Last year over 1500 OCM points, 5th in OCM ranking, a win in St. Petersburg, a YC and a stage victory in Portugal... nice, but whatever. Miyazaki wants to win in his home town as the first Japanese ever, that’s all that counts. For family and friends, for thousands of Japanese people in the streets, for millions of Japanese people watching on television. That one moment of raising his arms in the air in his city for his own people, that's the dream. And it can come true. Day 35 is the day of Mito – Tokyo. Winning that race will make him immortal and than he will no longer be a hero, he will be a Japanese legend.

Yeh but this press release was written on day 30 or something so back then he still had chance to win.

Now Susu is broken, and me and my medical staff are trying to get him fit and motivated for Cymru Taith. So i hope he find he confidence back in Wales.
